15 Jul Custom Designed Multi-Purpose Theater Room

One of the goals that many of our clients have is to make their home the ‘destination of choice’ for their children and their friends. Many of our clients prefer to supervise their kids and encourage them to enjoy activities within the home. Our client was planning a full basement renovation project. They realized that the most important element was the home entertainment technology. They visited our showroom, loved our demonstrations, and quickly made decisions to include the elements in the photos below.
The first choice that needs to be considered when starting a project of this type is to decide whether to design a dedicated theater room or a multipurpose theater room. A dedicated theater room consists of theater seating, wall mounted acoustic treatment, and additional elements creating a theater-like environment. It is important to be able to eliminate all distractions by closing the door and be enveloped by the presentation. The sole purpose of this room is to enjoy movies, concerts, TV shows, and sports. In some cases a bar and bar stools can be added at the rear end of the theater room.
A multipurpose theater room, however, as the name implies, includes numerous elements. The multipurpose theater room has the theater component, but also may feature other entertainment areas, including a billiard table, a full wet bar, an arcade, popcorn machine, and more. In most cases, the movie screen can be seen from all of the entertainment areas of the room.
For this particular project, the client opted for the multipurpose theater room that contains a full wet-bar, billiard table, and high-end theater area, with reclining leather theater seating.
The theater room boasts a 4k 85” flat screen video display. The entire complement of speakers are Dynaudio from Denmark. The surround sound configuration features a 5.2.4 Dolby Digital system. This means 5 speakers at ear level, 2 subwoofers, and 4 Dolby Atmos speakers in the ceiling. The flush-mounted center channel speaker was designed to be installed into the cabinet wall underneath the video display. This uniquely designed center channel speaker is modular and can be configured based on the performance level desired by the client. PAC selected this specific product to compliment the shallow depth of the video display above.
PAC recommended two subwoofers to be built into the cabinet, right and left, which energizes the room with tight, solid bass frequencies. The rear channel speakers are built into the sidewall and are mounted at ear level parallel with the theater seats. Dolby Atmos speakers positioned in the ceiling achieve a three-dimensional sound field that provides special effects sounds from above when appropriate.
Behind the rear seating row, there is a waist high knee wall. On the other side of the wall is a billiard table with a custom three light fixture to properly illuminate the pool table. The billiard room area is positioned behind the theater so guests can shoot pool and enjoy the theater at the same time.
The fully featured wet bar, complete with bar stools, refrigerator, sink and elegant lighting, features a 50” mirror TV. The sound for the TV is provided by four flush-mounted, round speakers in the ceiling. Guests can choose to view the mirror television at the bar, or to watch the theater screen from the bar seating.
A properly designed and appointed equipment rack is equally important as the components in the entertainment area. For this installation, the rack is hidden discreetly in the mechanical room. In the top of the rack, there are two Directv boxes, one for the theater, and one for the bar mirror TV. Next, is the Kaleidescape movie and concert server on which the users can download movies and concerts and watch anytime, with the highest image and sound resolution. On the next shelf, there are two Apple TV video streamers, one for the theater and one for the bar. On the next shelf is the LEA four channel power amplifier, that drives the flush ceiling mounted Dolby Atmos speakers. An AudioControl audio video receiver is the next component in the rack. This particular model and brand produces exceptional sonic performance and versatile connectivity. It is one of a handful of high-end receivers that are licensed for Dirac digital room correction software. Dirac allows PAC to calibrate the system electronically. Each speaker is tuned independently with the appropriate time-delay and equalization. Dirac calibration produces the best possible sonic performance in any given room space. Dirac tuning takes PAC’s installations to the highest level possible. Many of our competitors are not trained or experienced enough to perform Dirac tuning. The shelf of the rack contains two, identical subwoofer amplifiers. These subwoofer amplifiers are purposefully installed in the rack instead of being built into the actual subwoofer cabinet. This arrangement allows PAC install techs to tune the subwoofers without removing them from their wall-mounted enclosures. It is obvious to see that PAC takes great pride and attention to detail in every aspect of our custom installations.
So, in the final analysis, this multipurpose theater room meets and exceeds our client’s expectations and becomes a destination for his entire family, and allows guests to enjoy many entertainment experiences. Our client has mentioned that he has postponed several vacations because his family enjoys their time spent in their new entertainment space so much, that they never want to leave.
